LEARNING DESIGN IN CONTEXT

A Citylab Sarasota architectural class project

As an academic challenge, graduate students at the University of Florida developed site plans for the Bayfront Cultural Center and designed a concert hall to house the Sarasota Symphony Orchestra.

About Citylab Sarasota

Starting in the Fall of 2015, the University of Florida introduced a satellite Master of Architecture program in Sarasota, a community which has long been at the forefront of architectural design in the state.

The initial class of seven advanced standing students shares the McCulloch Pavilion with the nonprofit Center for Architecture Sarasota.

  • As part of the 2-year M. Arch. degree program, students engage in design studio coursework centered around local real-world architectural challenges.
  • The Spring semester design studio, led by Professor Martin Gold, program director of CityLab-Sarasota, focused on a cultural center and concert hall for the Sarasota Bayfront.
  • The architectural design process, and students' site plans and concert hall design concepts for the Cultural Center are presented in this website.
